Description: Stigmaria is a
form genus used to classify the basal parts and rootlets of various
scale trees. The diamond shapes indicate nodes where ribbon-like
rootlets grew. Stigmaria are most often found in layers of clay below
coal seams; the clay layer is thought to represent the layer of soil
below the coal swamps. (Class Lycopsida, Order Lepidodendrales)
Age: Late Carboniferous Period (Pennsylvanian Epoch), 292-320mya.
